3 New Water Heater Regulations and Why They're Important

Unless your water heater falters or fails, it's natural not to give it a second thought, but from washing your hands to cleaning the dishes, you rely on the household appliance for your daily needs. Keeping the water hot accounts for a substantial portion of your energy usage too. In an effort to reduce Manchester residential and commercial energy consumption, the Department of Energy enacted new efficiency rules for water heaters in April 2015. It's to your advantage to take note of the following three water regulations.

New Energy Standards for Tanks Under 55 Gallons

Most American homes have water heaters that hold less than 55 gallons. The new regulations require manufacturers to make modest improvements to these standard models to increase their energy efficiency by around 4 percent. Energy-saving upgrades being implemented include better insulation and heat exchangers. Many of the gas, electric and oil water heaters offered by major brands already comply with the new standards.

Changes in Size and Technologies for Larger Water Heaters

For those with water heaters that hold more than 55 gallons, the new regulations may make installing a new model a significantly more expensive operation. Manufacturers have had to shift to new technologies to achieve the required efficiency gains. Some brands now offer heat pump models that improve efficiency by utilizing heat captured from the surrounding air. Others offer condensing units that reduce energy consumption by reclaiming escaped heat.

These new models are generally more expensive than their older counterparts, and they're often larger too. If you're getting to replace a larger water heater, you'll need to ensure that you choose a model that will fit in your space.

Replacement of Existing Water Heaters Is Not Required

The new federal regulations apply only to purchases of new water heaters. You do not have to replace your existing units. Retailers are also allowed to continue to sell older models until their inventory is depleted. If your water heater is reaching the end of its service life, replacing it with an energy-efficient model will save you money over the long run through lower monthly utility bills.

If your current water heater is stored in a tight space like a closet, however, it may make more financial sense to replace it with an older model while they're still available. A reputable Manchester plumbing company can help guide you towards the choice best for you.
